The answer surprises many first-time visitors—in the best way. Unlike the beaches you’ll find in Florida or Alabama, the Mississippi Gulf Coast has its own unique personality. Wide sandy beaches, calm water, beautiful sunsets, and miles of room to spread out make it one of the most relaxing beach destinations on the Gulf.

LEGENDS of the Bayou RV Park is conveniently located near several public beaches. Approximate drive times include:
- Bay St. Louis Beach – 10 minutes
- Waveland Beach – 15 minutes
- Pass Christian Beach – 20 minutes
- Gulfport Beach – 30 minutes
- Biloxi Beach – 40 minutes
Whether you want a quiet morning walk or a full day in the sun, you’ll have plenty of options nearby.
Did You Know? Mississippi’s Beaches Are Mostly Man-Made
One of the most fascinating facts about our coastline is that much of the sandy beach you see today was intentionally created. The Mississippi Gulf Coast features approximately 26 miles of continuous white sand, making it the longest man-made beach in the world. The beaches were developed in the early 1900s alongside the construction of Highway 90, creating the broad shoreline visitors enjoy today. (Visit Mississippi)

Why Are the Waves So Small?
If you’re expecting crashing surf, you’ll notice something different here.
Mississippi’s barrier islands—including Ship Island, Horn Island, Cat Island, Petit Bois Island, and Deer Island—sit offshore and protect the coastline from much of the Gulf’s wave energy. These natural islands create the calmer waters of the Mississippi Sound, making our beaches especially popular with families and young children. (MSGCNHA)
The calmer water also makes activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, and floating much more enjoyable.
Looking for Crystal-Clear Gulf Water?
If your dream is turquoise water and sugar-white sand, plan a day trip to Ship Island.
Located about 12 miles offshore, Ship Island is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore and offers some of the clearest water anywhere along the Mississippi coast. Visitors can swim, snorkel, explore historic Fort Massachusetts, and often spot dolphins during the ferry ride. Ferry service operates seasonally from Gulfport. (National Park Service)

Understanding High Tide and Low Tide
The Mississippi Coast experiences two high tides and two low tides each day.
While our tides aren’t as dramatic as some coastlines, they still affect:
- The amount of exposed beach
- Fishing conditions
- Sandbars
- Shell collecting
- Water depth

What You’ll Find in the Water
The Mississippi Sound is home to an incredible variety of marine life. You might spot:
- Blue crabs
- Small fish
- Stingrays (especially in warmer months)
- Hermit crabs
- Jellyfish (occasionally)
- Dolphins farther offshore
- Pelicans diving for fish
As with any Gulf beach, it’s always a good idea to shuffle your feet when walking through shallow water during the summer to avoid surprising a resting stingray.
What to Pack for the Perfect Beach Day
We recommend bringing:
- Beach chairs
- Umbrella or canopy
- Plenty of sunscreen
- Towels
- Cooler with drinks and snacks
- Sand toys for children
- Water shoes (optional)
- Bug spray for evenings
- A small trash bag to help keep our beaches beautiful

One of the best parts about staying at LEGENDS of the Bayou RV Park is that you can enjoy a full day at the beach and then return to a peaceful campground tucked away along the bayou. Spend the afternoon swimming in the Gulf, enjoy dinner in Bay St. Louis, and finish the evening relaxing under the stars back at your campsite. That’s one of our favorite ways to experience the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
