Yes, There Are Alligators
One of the first questions we hear from guests visiting our Bay St. Louis RV park is: “Are there alligators?”
Yes. American alligators are native to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and occasionally make appearances in the bayous, rivers, marshes, and wetlands surrounding our campground. Fortunately, alligators are naturally shy and generally avoid people. Most spend their days quietly floating near the shoreline or resting along the banks.
Like any wild animal, they deserve respect. Enjoy the opportunity to see one from a safe distance, never feed them, and never attempt to approach one for a photograph. Thousands of people safely enjoy RV camping on the Mississippi Gulf Coast every year alongside this remarkable wildlife.
A Birdwatcher’s Paradise
If you enjoy birdwatching, you’ll quickly discover why so many guests return to our waterfront RV park year after year. Depending on the season, you may spot:
- Great Blue Herons
- Great Egrets
- Snowy Egrets
- Brown Pelicans
- White Pelicans (winter)
- Ospreys
- Bald Eagles (occasionally)

Fishing Begins Right Outside Your RV
One of the advantages of staying at our Mississippi Gulf Coast RV campground is that fishing begins just steps from your campsite. The tidal waters surrounding LEGENDS support a healthy mix of freshwater and saltwater species, making the area productive throughout much of the year. Depending on the season, anglers regularly catch:

- Redfish
- Flounder
- Black drum
- Sheepshead
- White trout
- Catfish
- Largemouth bass farther upriver
- Bluegill and other freshwater species
Even if you aren’t fishing, you’ll often see mullet jumping across the surface or schools of baitfish moving with the changing tides.

Life beneath the water is just as fascinating. As the tide moves in and out of the bayou, you may notice:

Dolphins Are Never Far Away
Although dolphins rarely enter the bayou itself, they’re commonly seen throughout Bay St. Louis and the Mississippi Sound. If you book a fishing charter, spend time around the harbor, or take a boat ride during your stay, there’s an excellent chance you’ll see bottlenose dolphins swimming alongside boats or feeding in the bay.

What About Snakes?
Like every healthy wetland ecosystem, snakes are part of life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Most snakes found around our campground are harmless species, including:
- Banded water snakes
- Ribbon snakes
- Rat snakes
- Rough green snakes
Venomous snakes, including cottonmouths (water moccasins), also live in coastal wetlands but are encountered much less frequently. The best approach is simple: if you see a snake, give it space and allow it to move on naturally.
The Smaller Wonders
Sometimes it’s the little things guests remember most. During your stay, you may hear frogs calling after sunset, watch turtles basking on fallen logs, or see dragonflies hovering above the water. Depending on the season, you’ll also notice butterflies, lightning bugs, honeybees, and other pollinators throughout the campground.
Nature is always active—you just have to slow down enough to notice it.
Mosquitoes & Coastal Living
Because LEGENDS is located on the bayou, mosquitoes are part of life during the warmer months, particularly around sunrise and sunset. Fortunately, they’re much less active during the cooler months, which is one reason so many snowbirds enjoy winter RV camping on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Packing a small bottle of insect repellent is usually all you’ll need for comfortable evenings outdoors.
