A Celebration More Than 100 Years in the Making
Mardi Gras has deep roots along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. While the tradition itself dates back centuries as the celebration before the Christian season of Lent, Biloxi has hosted organized Carnival parades since 1908. Today, the Gulf Coast Carnival Association continues many of those traditions, including the coronation of King d’Iberville and Queen Ixolib and the famous Fat Tuesday parade through downtown Biloxi. Unlike the massive crowds found in New Orleans, Coastal Mississippi offers a more relaxed experience. Families line the streets with lawn chairs, children eagerly collect beads and MoonPies, local marching bands fill the air with music, and neighbors gather for one of the Coast’s favorite traditions.

- Bay St. Louis Lundi Gras Parade – Held on the Monday before Fat Tuesday, this colorful hometown tradition is the only Lundi Gras parade on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast and features decorated floats, golf carts, music, and plenty of family fun. Mystic Krewe of the Seahorse

What to Expect
If you’ve never attended a Gulf Coast Mardi Gras parade, you’re in for a treat.
Floats toss traditional “throws” into the crowd, including colorful beads, MoonPies, stuffed animals, cups, footballs, and other souvenirs. Marching bands, dance teams, and local organizations add to the festive atmosphere, while many families arrive early with folding chairs and coolers to claim a favorite viewing spot.
The overall atmosphere is energetic, welcoming, and much more relaxed than many visitors expect.
Tips for Enjoying Mardi Gras Like a Local
The best parade days start with a little planning. Arrive early to find parking, bring folding chairs if you plan to stay awhile, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t forget sunscreen—even February afternoons on the Mississippi Coast can be pleasantly warm. Most importantly, bring a bag for all the beads and other treasures you’re likely to catch throughout the day.
